This spec defines the Audio Codec '97 (AC '97) Architecture and Digital Interface (AC-Link) specifically designed for implementing audio and modem I/O functionality in mainstream PC systems. It doesn't include specification for AC '97 Digital Controller component (DC '97). Typical AC '97 devices are:

Audio Codec (often referred to as AC '97 or just AC)
Modem Codec (often referred to or abbreviated as MC '97 or just MC)
Combined Audio/Modem Codec (often referred to or abbreviated as AMC '97 or just AMC)
